Car Scratch Depth: Can It Polish Out or Does It Need Paint?
A scratch in the surface of the clear coat may improve with polishing. A deeper scratch that goes through the clear coat may need paint repair, because polishing cannot replace missing paint. The right answer depends on how deep the damage goes.

Why scratch depth changes the repair
Car paint usually has primer, color and a clear outer coat. A shallow mark affects the clear coat's surface. Polishing can improve some of these marks by removing a thin layer of that coat. If a scratch has gone through the clear coat, that same approach cannot restore the paint below it; some deeper damage needs repainting. 3M's explanation of automotive paint and scratches describes these layers and limits for its scratch-removal system.
Can a photo tell how deep the scratch is?
A photo can show where the scratch is and how much of the panel appears affected. It cannot confirm which paint layers were damaged or settle the right repair on its own. A mark's appearance is useful context, but the damage needs a closer assessment before anyone can choose an approach.
Why polishing won’t remove every car scratch
Removing a surface defect takes away a little clear coat. Trying to work away a deeper mark can remove too much of that layer without replacing the missing color. That is why it helps to find out what was damaged before deciding whether paint correction or paint repair makes sense.
